Hastings resident, Virgil Gene Jurgens, 90, passed away Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Mary Lanning Memorial Healthcare.

Services will be Friday, February 5, 2016 at 10 am at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings with Rev. Joel Remmers officiating. Private family graveside service in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Virgil was born on September 29, 1925 in Hildreth, NE, the son of Onno Harm and Hilka Marie (Caspers) Jurgens. He grew up in the Hildreth area, attending and graduating from Hildreth High School in 1942. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947.

Virgil was united in marriage to Glenn Lee Mae Ortgiesen on June 1, 1946 in Mountain View CA. In 1948, the couple made their home in Hastings, where he worked for Fast Construction Company for 30 years. He started his second career selling real estate for Marge Hardin Realty Company in Hastings. After retirement, Virgil and Lee owned and operated Jurgens Wheel Estate selling campers and motorhomes.

He was a member and past church council member for the First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing at the “Cabin” in his spare time, and having his breakfast time with Lee and his dog Daisy.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harold and Kay Jurgens, and two sisters and spouses, Evelyn and Delbert Ortgiesen, and Donna and Marvin Albers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Lee Jurgens of Hastings, one sister, Arlyce Jean Albers of Minden, sister-in-law, Val Jean Jurgens, five daughters and sons-in-laws, Terri Jackson and Stephen Duckett, of Melbourne, Australia, Deb and Reg Gillett, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Michelle and John Thomas, of Newport News, VA, Jacqueline and Richard Koopmann, Sioux Falls, SD, Lori Horton and Gerardo Martinez, both of Hastings, and one son and daughter-in-law Scott and Kathi Jurgens, of Arvada, CO. He was also blessed to enjoy the lives of eleven grandchildren and their spouses: Sarah Duckett, Jessie and Darren Dakus, Reggie and Krystin Gillett, Brad and Sheila Antonides, Katie and Kris Kluver, Jordanne and Eugene Park, Ali Horton, Jenni and Ky Molholm, Jaimie and Troy Reeves, Jade Horton and Hannah Jurgens and her fiancé Taylor Helt. Twelve great-grandchildren brightened his life: Rainy, Summer, and Ever Dakus, Marcus and Lillian Antonides, Ella, Jacob, and Josephine Kluver, Alexandra Park, Josiah Horton, Maison and Wesley Reeves, a host of nieces and nephews who he enjoyed and cherished, along with a special friend, Royal Miller.
