War Period: WORLD WAR II

Paul William Gilmore, DDS died, surrounded by family, on January 27, 2016, at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, SC.

His funeral service will be held at the graveside Monday, February 1, 2016, in Beaufort National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, where a Prayer Service will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Paul was born in Michigan City, Indiana to Wallace Lewis and Jessie Margaret Barnett Gilmore.

He lived in Charleston for 58 years and recently relocated to the Woodlands at Furman to be closer to family. While in Charleston, he was an active charter member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and also attended East Cooper Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Friday morning prayer breakfast "Man to Man". Paul was a member of Michigan City High School Class of 1946. After graduating high school, he joined the Marines where he was introduced to the Low Country through his time at Paris Island. After completing his service with the Marines, he graduated from Franklin College, followed by his graduation from dental school at Indiana University where he was President of his class for his Junior and Senior years. Following dental school, he established his dental practice in Charleston in 1957 and retired from practice in 1997.

Paul had a love for people, having never met a stranger. He loved living in Charleston, was an avid fisherman, and took every opportunity 'to put a line in the water'. His love of life and ability to make people laugh was infectious and is how he will be remembered. His family meant the most to him. He greatly loved spending time with his grandchildren and was thrilled with the recent addition of a great-grandson.

Paul is survived by his wife, Melva Martin Gilmore, who he married in 1947; sister, Jane Gilmore Frede (Ray); two children, Gail Senn (Jerry) of Greenville, SC and Martin Paul Gilmore (Susan) of Winston-Salem, NC; six grandchildren: Rebecca, Caroline, Trey, Margaret, William and Davis; and great-grandson, Daniel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, John and Richard; and his sister, Mary.
