While the marker and the death certificate are in agreement, I believe they are also in error. The informant must have misremembered or perhaps the correct date was not known. Going to the source found closest to the time of birth, the 1850 U.S. census, Jacob's age is given as 5. He has 3 younger sisters with ages of 2 months, 2 years, and 4 years. There is no possible way Jacob could have been born in 1848 and have three younger sisters. The 1860 U.S. census confirms these ages and the birth order of the children. Therefore, Jacob was most likely born 1844-1846.
