"Ionia - Mrs. Carrie Howes, one of this community's old and respected residents, noted her 89th birthday last Thursday.
Mrs. Howes has always lived in this area. She was the daughter of Fred and Ella Bush of West Bloomfield. Mrs. Howes now lives with her son, George Howes and family, and enjoys good health except for lameness. In 1882 she married George Howes a well known farmer in this area. About 40 years ago they moved to Ionia village where Mr. Howes worked in a local store owned by Raymond Appleton until a short time before his death in 1941. The couple had six children, four of whom are still living. They are: Will Howes of West Bloomfield, Fred and George Howes, both of Ionia, and Harry Howes of Harrisburg, Pa." (Shortsville and Manchester Enterprise, 26 February 1953)
