Dies In Lewisburg

Dr. Harry R. Thornton, 76, highly respected Lewisburg resident, died at 6:40 a. m. Monday, November 23, 1953, at his home, 39 South Third Street, of a heart condition. Dr. Thornton had been in failing health for the past ten years and, had been serious for the past year. He had been confined to bed for the last three weeks.
A native of Lewisburg, he was born February 27, 1877, in the house in which he died. He was the son of the late Dr. Thomas C. Thornton and Sallie E. Ruhl Thornton. He attended Lewisburg schools and Bucknell Academy and continued his schooling at Jefferson Medical College and the Medical Chirugical College, both of Philadelphia. The latter institution later became part of the University of Pennsylvania. He served his internship at Williamsport Hospital and for one year was engaged in practice at Freeland before returning to Lewisburg where he continued the practice of medicine for many years.
During World War I he served as a lieutenant in the Medical Corps and was a member of the armed forces from July, 1918, to 1919. He married M. Lee Cole, formerly of Mecklenburg County, on June 29, 1929. He was the third generation of his family engaged in the practice of medicine in Lewisburg. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge of Lewisburg, the Lewisburg American Legion Post, The Lycoming County Medical Society, the Sigma Chi social fraternity, and for many years served as vice, president and treasurer of the Buffalo Valley Telephone Company. He formerly was a surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and he was Union County medical director at the time of his death.
Surviving were his widow and one daughter, Miss Barbara Thornton, of Herndon, Virginia, an employe of the Federal Government in Washington, D. C. Also surviving was a sister, Miss Mary Thornton, living at home.
Funeral services were held at the Lewisburg Presbyterian Church in charge of his pastor, Reverend Peter Westra.
Burial was in Lewisburg Cemetery.
His funeral was directed by the Glenn E. Dornsife Funeral Home, South Second Street, Lewisburg.
