Doris Jean Schildt (née Johnston), born Sept. 29, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., passed away on Dec. 14, 2015, at the age of 84 in Mission Viejo, Calif.
Doris’ life reflected an American story of overcoming adversity with grace and courage. She and her twin brother, Don, were the youngest children of Albert and Esther (Paulson) Johnston. When Doris was 2 years old, her mother died unexpectedly, leaving eight children.
Because it was the height of the Great Depression and her father was unable to care properly for the family, the children were scattered among various relatives in the Midwest. Doris and Don went to live with their maternal grandparents, Hans and Mattie Paulson, in Blooming Prairie, Minn. She often reminisced fondly about her days living and working on the farm, learning many domestic and gardening skills that would serve her well throughout her life.
When Doris was 10, her beloved grandmother died and she was sent to live in an orphanage in Chicago. It was a difficult transition, but in typical fashion, she found value in the lessons of hard work and perseverance.
After high school graduation, Doris found work and moved into an apartment in the city with a friend.
She met her husband Raymond “Jake” Schildt, and they married in 1950. Doris adored her in-laws and especially cherished her mother-in-law, Frieda Schildt.
Doris and Jake raised their only son in Arlington Heights, Ill. It was a semi-rural suburb at the time and like many neighbors, they grew a wide variety of crops on the several acres of land each lot had. She enjoyed those years of planting, tending, harvesting, preserving, and especially preparing the bounty of fruits and vegetables they grew.
One constant in Doris’ life was her love of animals. She was a soft touch for every stray animal that crossed her path, and she rescued countless furry and feathered creatures.
After retirement when she and Jake moved to Phelps, Wis., to live on Kildare Lake, she was able to enjoy nature’s beauty with up-close views of all the many birds and animals of the nearby Nicolet National Forest.
Over the years, the Wisconsin winters became too difficult for Doris and Jake, and so in 2006 they moved to southern California to be near their son and grandson. Doris loved living close to her son, grandson and daughter-in-law, and many happy memories were created during those California years.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Jake, as well as all her siblings and in-laws; and is survived by her son, Keith; daughter-in-law, Susan; grandson, Luke; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
She will be interred at Union Cemetery in Blooming Prairie, next to her grandmother.
