Jerry was born in Buffalo, Texas, to the late Thomas and Vada Mae Bottoms, and moved to Teague as a child. He graduated from Teague High School with the class of 1951, and soon went to work for Burlington Northern-Rock Island Railroad as a signal maintainer. He served in the U.S. Army for two years before beginning a 30 year long career as a truck driver. He also served for one year as a firefighter for the city of Houston. Jerry lived in several places in and out of Texas during his career, and returned to Teague in 1988 and went to work for the Mexia State School until his retirement in 1998. He loved playing and watching several sports including racquetball and softball which he played into his 50s. He was a member of the Lions and Jaycees clubs. He was a Methodist for many years before converting to Catholicism and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mexia.
He was preceded by his wife of 50 years, Grace Florence "Mickey" Buhrfiend Bottoms, in 2003; brothers: Alvis Bottoms, Arnold Bottoms, and Archie Bottoms; and sister, Margie Ruth Roberts.
He is survived by sons: David Bottoms and wife, Nancy, of Racine, Wisconsin, Gary Bottoms, of Manteno, Illinois, and Kenneth Bottoms and wife, LeeAnn, of Spring; daughters: Gail Moore and husband, Dickie, of Teague, Pamela South and husband, Johnny, of Garland, and Kimberly McCracken and husband, Daniel; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Carl Bottoms, of Winnie, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
