Afton Harriet Kimber Frandsen, age 96, of Springville, passed away January 20, 2016, in Salem, Utah.

Afton was born in Salina, Utah, to James Evan and Mary Gates Kimber. She attended schools in Salina, Richfield and Provo, graduating from Provo High School in 1937. One of Afton’s ambitions was to attend Brigham Young University. Although it was during the difficult depression years, her own hard work, a scholarship, and help from her family made it possible for her to achieve her dream and graduate from Brigham Young University in 1941.

Afton married Russell Evan Frandsen in 1941. He was a former classmate at North Sevier High School and a graduating classmate at BYU. Afton and Russell began their married life teaching school together in Mountain Home, Utah.

After the United States entered World War II, Afton worked at the Remington Arms manufacturing plant and then taught school in Sigurd, Utah, while Russell served in the Army Air Corp, including overseas assignments in the Philippines and New Guinea. Following the war, Afton and Russell settled in Springville, Utah. Afton also taught in elementary schools for several years in the Nebo School District.

Afton loved the outdoors and traveling with her husband and children. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was a devoted mother and wife. Afton was a skilled teacher. She loved to read and sought to educate herself throughout her life. She was an exceptional example for living a frugal and provident life. She valued education highly and ensured that her children had the opportunity to attend and graduate from college. She was particularly proud of the scholastic accomplishments of all her children and grandchildren. Most of all, she loved being with her family. Afton has three children, 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Afton is survived by her children: Kay (Robert) Christensen, LaVar (Darla) Frandsen, and Grant (Carol) Frandsen; her brother, Warren (Maxine) Kimber; and brothers-in-law: Richard Frandsen and Weston Frandsen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the Walker Mortuary in Spanish Fork with a viewing from 9:45 to 10:45 prior to the service. Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
