He was a private, and later a corporal, in Company E (Muscogee County), 12th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He fought in all of the major battles of the Civil War with Robert E. Lee's Army of Virginia, until he was captured at Spotsylvania in 1864. He spent the last year of the war in a Union prison camp.
He married Harriet Bryant in 1867. They lived and worked on her parents' farm in Harris County, Georgia, until his death in the late 1870's. They had six children. His grave site is unmarked.
