Death Notice from the Bangor Daily Whig & Courier (Bangor, Me), Friday, June 21, 1865, Issue 301, Col C: Suicide. Sylvanus Banks of North Haven, committed suicide by drowning himself on Saturday. He took all the valuables from his pockets, tied the killock to his body, and jumped overboard.

In a subsequent article in the Bangor Daily Whig & Courier (Bangor, Me), Saturday, June 24, 1865, Issue 302, Col C: On Saturday last, a man who was fishing in our bay, saw a little east of Monroe's Island, in the track of the packets which ply between the islands and this city, a boat apparently adrift. He rowed to it, found it abandoned, but on pulling in the painter, which was overboard, he drew up the body of a man, with the painter tied around his middle, about ten feet from the killock. In the boat, upon the after thwart, were the hat, coat, wallet and spectacles of the drowned man, the wallet containing $27 in bills. The body was brought to this city, and identified as that of Silvanus Banks of North Haven. Not long ago, he sold his farm on North Haven, a place on which he had always lived, for $1000, and recently came to the main land to purchase another. In looking about he found that he could not buy another as good as the one he had sold without paying more than he had received for his, and being depressed in spirits on account of this fact. It is conjectured that in a moment of more than usual despondency he concluded to end his life.
