He had received a call about three and half miles below Prescott. He confronted a group of 26 Italian railroad laborers; when he tried to arrest one of them they attacked him, beating him to death with picks, shovels and jack handle. Prescott City Marshal James Hamill was also severely injured. The group fled and a man hunt was organized. News of the murder spread quickly. Telegraph and telephone messages were sent from Prescott to Diamond Bluff, Hager City, Bay City, Maiden Rock and other towns. Every farmer who had a phone was notified. Posses were sent out in all directions. Most of the bands of murderers were cauhgt in the rough, wild, rugged and heavily timbered county at the mouth of Big River, where they abandoned railroad handcars used for escape. Near Diamond Bluff a group of about 10 attempted to farmer George Scullens as he drove along with his team and wagon. About 10 of the workers hold up in a log cabin but the posse tracked them down and guarded them till help came. Other attackers were caught in River Falls, Ellsworth, Trimbelle and south of Bay City and were put in jails at Prescott and Ellsworth. The next evening a good-sized crowd of citizens went to the jail at Prescott equipped for hanging bee, but August Wehrman, and the guard refused to deliver over his seven prisoners. A trial was later held at Ellsworth. Of those charged, two were find quilty and 17 acquitted. Soon after, the verdict was set aside and the men were released.
