Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.
She was born on Aug. 7, 1912, in Cuba City, Wis., daughter of Richard F. and Louise E. (Ripperda) Conlon. She married William J. Klauer on Oct. 23, 1937, at St. Columb-kille's Catholic Church, Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2001.
She graduated from Clarke College in 1933. Upon graduation, she taught seventh grade at St. Joseph Catholic School in Elkader, Iowa.
She was a member of Nativity Parish, Clarke College Board (for more than 20 years), Theresians of Dubuque and the Catholic Mothers Study Club. She was one of the founding members of the Mercy Service Club, where she held numerous positions.
She received the Honorary Degree "Doctor of Letters" from Clarke College, and an award from the Eastern Iowa Chapter of National Society of Fundraising, as outstanding individual philanthropist.
She and her husband, Bill, established many scholarships at the Dubuque colleges and various other universities.
By appointment, she was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She was honored for outstanding support by the Indiana Province Congregation of Holy Cross.
Carol was a beautiful woman both to look at and to know. Her greatest loves were her faith and her family. She was a devoted wife and mother.
She enjoyed world travel with her husband, Bill, and the many cruises she took with her family. For the past 25 years, Carol had taken great pleasure in the Klauer family annual vacation in northern Wisconsin. There she was able to observe the grandchildren, and recently the great-grandchildren, develop an appreciation for each other and for the outdoors.
In her final years, Carol especially enjoyed the daily companionship and lively conversations with her dedicated caregivers.
Surviving are three sons, William R. Klauer, Robert E. (Judy) Klauer and James F. (Nancy) Klauer, all of Dubuque; grandchildren, Kristen (Michael) Igo, William (Dionne) Klauer, James (Kathleen) Klauer, Michael (Emily) Klauer and Justin Klauer; nine great-grandchildren, Caroline and Patrick Igo and Matthew, Caitlin, Daniel, Abigail, Henry, Ryan and Mia Klauer; two sisters, Sister Macrina Conlon, OP, and Vivian Vinton; and two brothers, Frank and Merlin Conlon.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Odilo, Vincent, Larry and Orlin Conlon; and two sisters, Dorothy Murphy and Sister Melita Conlon, OP.
