Anthony “Tony” Spenia, Sr., 87, of Summersville passed away
on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 due to injuries sustained from a
fall.
Tony was born in Shinnston, WV on April 5, 1928, a son of the
late John Spenia and Virginia DeBartolo Spenia.
Tony graduated from Shinnston High School in 1947 and later
joined the US Army where he served in the Korean War. After his
service in the army, Tony was employed by Peerless Eagle Coal
Company until his retirement.
Tony was a Catholic by faith and attended Saint John’s Catholic
Church of Summersville, WV and was a long time member of the
Knights of Columbus.
He was a charter member of the Summersville Moose Lodge.
Tony is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Coppa
Spenia; four children, Tony Spenia, Jr. (Kristy) of Summersville,
Lisa Taylor (Marty) of Deland, FL; John Spenia of Bumpass, VA;
Susan Spenia of Mt. Lookout; six grandchildren, Barbara
Shrewsbury, Chassidy Wendell, Tony Spenia, Chris Taylor,
Marissa Johnson, and Rachel Spenia; eight great grandchildren,
Adra Johnson, Michael Shrewsbury, Kyndal Lockman, Carson,
Reese, and Karoline Taylor, and Bella and Thea Spenia.
Besides his parents Anthony was also preceded in death by
three brothers, James, Frank, and Leonard Spenia, and five sisters,
Barbara Abruzzino, Litrena Belcastro, Mary Teano, Janice
Aragano, and Josephine Loria.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday,
January 18, 2016 in the St. John’s Catholic Church in Summersville
with Father Xavier Cooney, SVD officiating.
Friends may call at the White Funeral Home in Summersville on
Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. where a Christian Prayer Service will be
held at 5:30 p.m.
Additional calling hours will be held at the Harmer Funeral Home
in Shinnston on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. where a Christian Prayer
Service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Graveside rites will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday,
January 19, 2016 in the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery at Shinnston
with Father Xavier Cooney, SVD officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the
Knights of Columbus c/o Saint John’s Catholic Church or the Saint
John’s Catholic Church 1704 Webster Road Summersville, WV
26651 or to the Hubbard Hospice House 1001 Kennawa Drive
Charleston, WV 25311.
