Travis joined Company E of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry on 29 May 1861 at Nottoway Courthouse. He entered as a corporal. His company became Company G of the Second Virginia and Travis was made Lieutenant. He became ill and unfit for duty in August of 1861. He left in October and resigned in November. His discharge described him as being six feet tall with a light complexion, dark hair, and hazel eyes. He said he was a farmer.

Son of Travis Harris Epes and Elizabeth Branch Jones Epes. He married Anna Maria Fitzgerald. They had 12 children.
