He is sometimes counted as Count Wilhelm V or Wilhelm VI. As Duke and Margrave he is counted as Wilhelm I. Born the son of Gerhard V and Elisabeth of Brabant-Arschot. In 1336 he and his brother allied with emperor Ludwig IV and he was named Margrave. After Ludwigs death he supported the Luxembourger Charles IV as emperor. Edward III named him Earl of Cambridge in 1340. In 1356 he became the first duke of Jülich. Due to his childrens marriages his great-grandson Adolf was able to unite the duchies of Jülich, Berg and the county of Ravensberg.
