Cyrena M. Bishop, daughter of Rev. Joy and Mrs. Rhona Bishop, was born at Readsboro, Bennington Co., Vermont June 10, 1836, being the oldest of a family of 9 children.

She lived on top of the Seven Mountains during her girlhood days. Schools were very meager at her home place, so after the age of 10, she spent most of her school days away from home. She taught her first term of summer school at the age of 16 years, having spent the Fall of the two previous years at the Academy in Wilmington, Vermont. The summer she was 17, she taught a four month's school, and from that, went to the high school in Readsboro, Vermont, and taught a winter school. The next summer she taught a term in Shrove, Mass., going from there to Drury Academy in North Adams, Mass.

In the Spring of 1856, with her uncle Seth Bishop, and wife, she moved to Lincoln Co., Iowa. Her father and family moved there in October of the same year. She taught continuously in Iowa until 1860.

On July 4, 1861, she was married at Valley Farm, Iowa to Dr. L.H. Keys of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They lived at Valley Farm two years, and her son, Merton J. Keys, was born there. They then moved to Buchanan County, where one of the two daughters, Flora, was born. They moved to Strawberry Point, Iowa, from which place the doctor enlisted the last year of the Civil War in 21st Iowa Volunteers. He was detailed to hospital work in New Orleans, and located there until the close of the war.

After his return, they moved to Greeley, Iowa, where they spent several years. Another daughter, Mary, was born at this place. They moved from Iowa to Junction City, Kansas in 1876 for a 5-year stay. They next moved to Delphos, from Delphos to Scott City, then to Hutchinson, and again to Delphos, then to California, where they spent 3 years, and back to Delphos. Dr. Keys practiced in Delphos several years. He died October 11, 1908.

Mrs. Keys remained in Delphos for several years, going to New York City several times to visit her son, Merton. Her last stay in New York was five years, when, her health failing, she returned to Delphos to spend the remainder of her days.

She passed away on Feb. 18, 1930 and is survived by her son Merton; one grand-daughter, Mrs. Cliffie West, of Lodi, California; two great grandchildren, son and daughter of Mrs. West; two brothers, LeRoy Bishop of Long Beach, Calif. And Joy Bishop of Beloit, Kansas, besides cousins, nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at the Frank DuPont home, conducted by Rev. G.S. Smith. Burial in Delphos Cemetery.
