Birth name was Merwin David HAXTON. Born the son of Oliver Perry Haxton and Sarah (Bell) Haxton, at the age of three he was adopted by Bernard Benjamin and Sarah Gesuna Marie (Schankey) Holscher. He grew up in Delaware county, Iowa. He married Mary Louise Bender on January 23, 1932 in Dubuque, Iowa. They had seven sons and two daughters.
