Son of Mrs. Anna V. Alexander who resided at 531 East Avenue, Akron, Ohio during the war.

James served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17 #44-6757, 342nd Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Summit County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 17, 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Carpenter and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17 #44-6757 took off, with a crew of 11, from Amendola Field, Italy on a bombing mission over the refineries in Vienna.

At the rendezvous point, due to bad weather with heavy cloud cover, B-17 #42-102939 had to pull up to avoid the lead B-17 which had made a sharp left turn and when they did they struck B-17 #44-6757. Both B-17s ended up crashing on the shore of the Adriatic Sea.

James was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded a Purple Heart.

James is believed to be interred somewhere in Ohio.
