Frances U. Monk formerly of Newton Grove

Frances U. Monk, 89, died at Southwood Rehabilitation Center in Clinton, on Wednesday, January 6, 2016.

Mrs. Monk was born in Sampson County near Monks Crossroads May 6, 1926 to the late Patrick Henry and Lois Wilkins Usher. Upon graduation from Newton Grove High School, Ms. Monk attended Highsmith Hospital School of Nursing. After receiving her RN she attended Cook County School of Anesthesia, Chicago, Ill. After graduation, she returned to North Carolina and on February 19, 1954 she and John Paul Monk, were married at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton Grove. She retired in 1986 after nearly 40 years as a nurse anesthetist at Cape Fear Valley Hospital and Highsmith Rainey Hospital. She served as president and secretary of the Highsmith Hospital Alumnae Association.

After her retirement, she and her husband returned to Monks Crossroads to enjoy their families. Even after retirement she continued to serve as a nurse to several of her siblings and in-laws.

Ms. Monk is survived by a sister-in-law, Ellen Monk of Newton Grove; sister-in-law, Doris Monk of Goldsboro and a sister-in-law, Rose Cilio of Morton Grove, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Monk, siblings, Alma Barclay, Patty Monk, William Henry Usher and Catherine Adams.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 9 at the Newton Grove United Methodist Church.
