Mahlon enlisted at 16 years old on 24 Jun 1861 as a Private and mustered into "F" Co. NE 1st Infantry, while a member of "F" Co.; Mahlon was in the hottest of the three day fight at Fort Donelson, and also participated in the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Corinth.

Mahlon was transferred out on 6 Nov 1863 into "F" Co. NE 1st Cavalry and he re-enlisted in June 1864 at Duvall's Bluff, and in 1865 his Regiment was sent on the Plains to guard the frontier from the depredation of Indians. Mahlon was discharged on 2 May 1866 at the rank of Bugler.
