Merle Dean Porter, 67, went to worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:23) on Monday, January 4, 2016.

He was born on January 17, 1948 to Frances Anna & Clark Junior Porter in Guthrie. Merle's parents raised him and his sister Marsha in a loving Christian home. Spending time with his dad and Grandpa Porter at the farm led to his love of farming and ranching. As a boy, Merle also enjoyed spending time with his Grandpa White at his blacksmith shop and fishing together. Merle graduated from Guthrie high school. On May 11, 1968, Merle married the love of his life, Shirley Weir. They were married for 47 years. During the first 10 years of marriage, Merle worked for the Guthrie Fire Department. He was a gifted master builder, creating houses many people have been "Proud to Call Home." Some of Merle's most enjoyable times were spent with his family in the mountains at the Porter Ranch in New Mexico.
As a lifelong resident of Guthrie, OK. Merle will be dearly missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three grandsons, Krys Abrahms, Kyle and Enoch Lafferty.

Survivors include his wife Shirley; two daughters, Dena Henderson and her husband Kyle of Oklahoma City; Sheila Lafferty and her husband Eddie of Guthrie and one son, Kyle Dean Porter and his wife Karly of Guthrie. Merle was a much loved "Papa" to ten grandchildren, Da'lynn Porter & Ethan Henderson; Elijah, Kirstynn, & Kyla Lafferty; Mariah, Caitlyn, Jolee, Aubrey, & Brinley Porter. Merle was a loved brother by his only sister Marsha McCormac and her husband Bob of Broken Arrow and daughter Meredith.

The family finds peace in knowing that Merle's miracle was his healing in heaven and God will turn this to good. Together they will continue taking one day at a time.

Viewing will be held Thursday, January 7, from 2 P.M. – 8 P.M. at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home in Guthrie, with family greeting friends from 6 P.M. – 8 P.M.

Celebration of life will be Friday, January 8, at 1:00 P.M. at Community Church, 512 E. Seward Road, Guthrie, OK. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
