Catherine was the daughter of Carl and Mary Anna Sauer. She was born in Germany, in the Hess Darmstadt region,
and immigrated with her family in 1841. They settled in Scott County, Iowa, where Carl was a farmer.

She married James Doty on 25 Dec 1849 at her father's home in Scott County Iowa and they had eight children. After James died, Catherine continued to farm with the help of her sons. She married Charles Barkhurst, the father-in-law of her daughter Mary Ellen,on 1 Apr 1874 in Cedar County, Iowa. At the time of this writing, there is some dispute about whether they divorced or not. She is listed as divorced in the 1880 Federal census, and widowed in the 1885 Iowa Census. She eventually moved with her daughter, Oriana Doty Riddle and her family to Benton, Arkansas, where she died.
