Etta Josephine Phipps was born in Boone, Iowa, on March 27, 1927, the daughter of Clell and Silvia (Elliott) Johnson Iles.
She graduated from Pilot Mound High School in 1945.
On May 16, 1945, Etta married Joie Phipps in Boone.
In earlier years, Etta worked at the former Merit Baking Company (Archway Cookies) and former Alco Discount Center in Boone.
She loved collecting rocks, looking for artifacts, crocheting, family history, and caregiving for her family. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed puzzles, word search books, and vegetable gardening.
Etta was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather John B. Johnson, her husband Joie, a daughter Victoria McCoy, a grandson David McDanel, a brother Clell Iles Jr., and two sisters Beaulah Anderson and Maxine Sundine.
She is survived by a son Phil Phipps and wife Peggy of Stanhope; three daughters, Becky Walsh and husband Dick of Erie, Pennsylvania, Ann Lyness and husband Hal of Boone, and Lori Stewart and husband Kenny of Mount Vernon, Illinois; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, a great-great grandchild; and a good friend Bob Pepper of Boone.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 7, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Jason Walsh officiating. Burial will be in the Pilot Mound Cemetery in Pilot Mound.
