Brigadier General Maurice Cavileer Ashley, Jr., United States Marine Corps, Retired.

"Mike" was born April 1925 in Poughkeepsie, New York - Son of Maurice Cavileer Ashley, MD. and Eleanor Mitchell, RN.

He passed away in December, 2015 in Stuart, Florida.

He Graduated from Wappingers Central High School Wappingers, New York.

Then attended Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1946, as a USMC V-12 student.

Enlisted USMC February 1943. In 1945 attained rank of Platoon Sgt. Completed 7th Platoon Commander's Class Quantico, Va., and received commission as Second Lieutenant 1945.

Platoon Leader 3rd Pioneer Battalion, Guam 1945. Then, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, China, as machine gun platoon leader.

After November 1946 left USMC to return to college at The University of North Carolina earning a BA in Economics in 1948.

Then briefly employed by IBM as a salesperson in NY, NY.

He Returned to USMC continuous active duty in 1949 1st Infantry Battalion Ft. Schuyler, NY., where he received his regular commission.

Then was assigned to Port Lyautey, French Morocco, as Exec. Officer Marine Detachment.

Then in 1952 as Exec. Officer Commander in Chief, Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, London, England.

Promoted to 1st Lt. in 1951.

In 1953 completed Armored School Ft. Knox, KY, and was assigned as tank platoon leader 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC. He was then ordered to the Korean conflict where he served as a tank platoon leader, then company exec. officer, and later as tank company commander with C and B companies, 1st Tanks, 1st Marine Division.

He was awarded the Bronze Star w/ Combat "V", and Purple Heart, and promoted to Captain 1953.

He served from 1954-57 with the Testing and Educational Unit at Quantico.

Then he was ordered to aircraft carrier USS LEXINGTON , 7th fleet, as Commanding Officer Marine Detachment and in 1959 Promoted to Major.

He then Completed Amphib. Warfare School, Quantico, VA., in 1960.

His next assignment was as USMC Officer Instructor, NROTC, Columbia University, NY, NY,until 1963, where he concurrently earned an MA in Education from Columbia.

Following Columbia he returned to Camp Lejeune as Battalion S-3, then Battalion Executive Officer, 2nd Tank Battalion. While there he was in 1965 TDY to Exec. Officer Camp Garcia, Vieques, Puerto Rico. In 1965 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

Then he Graduated from Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va.

In 1966 and ordered to Bangkok, Thailand, as Chief, Plans and Advisory Branch, JUSMAG, Asst. Chief of Staff, Personnel J-1, then, as Counter-Insurgency Operations Officer and was awarded his first Legion of Merit.

In 1968 he was assigned to 1st Marine Division in South Vietnam, as Spec. Projects Officer, G-4, then Commanding Officer, 1st Tank Batt., then returned to Spec. Proj. Officer, G-4, lastly as Regimental Exec. Officer 5th Marines.

During service in Vietnam he received the Silver Star, a Gold Star in lieu of his second Legion of Merit, with Combat "V", and a Gold Star in lieu of a second Purple Heart.

After his Vietnam service he reported to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Pentagon, as Chief, Pacification Operations Branch, then Chief Counter-Insurgency and Special Activities in the office of the Special Assistant for Counter-Insurgency and Special Activities.

He was Promoted to Colonel in 1970 and Graduated from the National War College, Washington, D.C. in 1971. He remained in D.C. assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as Chief, Marine Corps Requirements Section, Surface Warfare Division.

He was Promoted to Brigadier General 1973. Then he Assumed duties as Chief of Staff, G-3, HDQTRS. USMC. Then assigned as Director Training and Education Division.

In 1974 he was assigned to Quantico Marine Corps Base as Deputy for Education, Education Center Marine Corps Development and Education Command.

He was there awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a third Legion Of Merit.

He retired from the United States Marine Corps 1 July, 1976.

He remained active and industrious. He started a yacht brokerage and Albin Yachts sales firm, Ashley Yachts, in Annapolis.

He then went to work as assistant, and later Director of Unemployment Security for the State of Maryland where he served for 10 years.

He undertook paralegal studies. He earned his United States Coast Guard 100 Ton Masters License. He raced sports cars in the SCCA successfully in the 1950's and 1960's campaigning Porsches, MGs, Morgans and other marques at tracks such as Watkins Glen and Marlboro. He raced sailboats throughout his life and enjoyed cruising on his Cal-25 and 2-29 berthed at his Annapolis home.

He was a fisherman and regularly fly-fished on the Beaverkill in NY, as well as salt-water sport fished on his power boats in Annapolis and Stuart. He enjoyed hunting. He was a fan of collegiate and professional sports and supporter of VMI, USNA, and the Redskins.

He is survived by his wife Gabrielle, (formerly Hickey of Carrickmacross, Ireland), her daughter Mary Palczer, Mary's son Nicholas Palczer, E 4, USAF, all of Stuart, Fl.

He is also survived by his former wife Marion B. (Clark), their daughter Valerie Ashley, Oak Hill, VA.,her daughter Kristen Moore and sons Brett and Michael Haberle, Michael Haberle's daughter Michelle.

As well as their son David Ashley, and his son David Ashley both of Annapolis, MD.

As well as their son Robert, Robert's sons Damien Ashley, 2nd Lt. USAF, Darien Ashley, all of Fairfax, VA.

Their son Sgt. John Samuel Ashley, Det., D.C. MPD., predeceases him, (10/1966 - 5/2004), John's daughter Tiffany Katinas, resides in Richmond, Va.

Interment will be at Arlington National cemetery the date to be determined.

Note: On June 13, 1961, then Maj. Ashley was admitted to membership in the Sons of the American Revolution by virtue of his direct descent from David Ashley, a private in the Massachusetts Militia.
