Mrs Nicey Hall

Mrs Nicey Hall, a well known colored woman, generally known as "Aunt Nicey" died suddenly Saturday morning at the home of Mr and Mrs Joseph Myers.

She was employed regularly to help Mrs Myers with her Saturday work, and on this occasion has reached the Myers home before Mrs Myers was ready to begin work. While Aunt Nicey sat down to warm at the register, Mrs Myers went up stairs but returning soon thereafter, Mrs Myers missed Aunt Nicey, and supposed she had gone to work in another part of the house. Failing to find her in either of the rooms, Mrs Myers went to the basement and there discovered the old lady sitting in a chair in front of the furnace, as tho asleep. Attempts to awaken her failed, and upon closer examination Mrs Myers found that the old lady was dead. A physician was called and E.A. Rainey, county coroner, investigated the death and determined that it resulted from heart trouble.

Mrs Hall was born to slavery, in Goldsberry [Goldsboro], NC. Until fourteen years of age she lived with her master, Colonel Whitfield and family, after which she was given her freedom.

She came to Boone County, Indiana, where she was married to Provert Hall. They began housekeeping on the farm of Ferdinand Bartlett, northeast of Lebanon, and for many years lived in that neighborhood. They came to Lebanon several years ago and bought a little home on Beck Street, where Mrs Hall continued to live until her death.

Mr Hall died several years ago.

Mrs Hall is survived by two sons, John and Frank Hall, both of Indianapolis.

The funeral was held at the church of the Apostolic Faith, on South Meridian street, Tuesday afternoon, by Rev Baldwin, the pastor.

Burial at Brown's Wonder.

[Inexplicably, every census shows that she was born in Kentucky.]
