Max Nelson, 88, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 8 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with Pastor Wayne Nestor officiating. Interment will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery at 1:15 PM that afternoon. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Friday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 10:15 AM at the church. Arrangements and photo by Gass Haney Funeral Home.

Max Lee Nelson was born September 16, 1927, in Stromsburg, NE, to Roy B. Nelson and Gladys V. (Adelson) Nelson. His parents moved to a farm east of Clarks when he was 6 months old. He attended District 61, a country school in Merrick County, and graduated from Clarks High School in May 1944. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln from September 1944 to May 1945. In 1945 he joined the Merchant Marine Academy and resigned in May 1947. He then returned to the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska from September 1947 until May 1948. On December 12, 1948, he married Verna Lee Farmer of Monroe, NE. They then lived on a farm north of Clarks. In 1953, they moved to Monroe and Max was employed by the Irrigation Pump Company of Columbus until April 1955 when he went to work for Behlen Manufacturing Company of Columbus. They moved to Columbus in 1960 and he continued to work at Behlens. In 1972, they moved back to a farm east of Clarks and Max drove back and forth to work until 1991 when he retired. He worked for Behlens for 36 years, first in the Engineering department, and then as Manager of Quality Control. He continued to farm until he sold the farm and retired to Columbus in 2013.

Max and Verna were the parents of two children, Deborah and Bradley. Verna passed away March 7, 2004. He married Nina Shockey of Columbus on September 19, 2006.
