Daughter of Lord John Lisle and Dame Alicia Lisle
Wife of Rev. Robert Whitaker.

Baptism: 3 JULY 1645 • Winchester, Hampshire, England
Burial: 27 MAR 1686 • Burgate, Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England

Born in 1643 in Temple Church, Hampshire, England. Christened on 3 Jul 1643 in Mr Lisle’s Chamber in Temple, Hampshire, England. Margaret died in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England, on 25-26 Mar 1686; she was 43. Buried on 27 Mar 1686.
Some references indicate death at nearby Stucton or Stuckton.

- 1643 Baptism: The [Puritan] “Temple Church” entry of the birth and baptism of Margaret, daughter of John and Alice Lisle in 1643 discloses a considerable shift of [her parents’] loyalty since their Anglican wedding 7 years before. Margaret was baptised on 3 July ‘at Mr Lisle’s chamber’ in the Temple, in contrast to other baptisms in the Temple Church, and the ceremony was performed by “Mr Pearson, curate’. He was probably the James Pearson licensed in 1672 as a Congregational chaplain to John Lisle’s close friend Bulstrode Whitlock.

"1672 Marriage: Margaret Lisle married the Reverend Robert Whitaker, a scholarly churchman from Lancashire. Denied a Cambridge degree because of his Nonconformity, he preached as a Presbyterian from about 1662, when he set up an Academy for Dissenting Students for those refused entry to the universities. He and Margaret lived at Stucton, a village near Fordingbridge. They were married at Dibden in 1672. Due to wartime fires the records are somewhat singed. Robert came from a long line Whitakers from Padiham in Lancashire. (Rutherfurd muddled him up too.)

"1686 Death: Margaret was buried on 27 March 1686, a fortnight after giving birth to Robert. Margaret never received the 70 pounds willed to her by her mother [who was beheaded the previous year]."

The Regicide’s Widow: Lady Alice LIsle and the Bloody Assize (2006) by Anthony Whitaker:
Reverend Robert Whitaker, a scholarly churchman from Lancashire. Denied a Cambridge degree because of his Nonconformity, he preached as a Presbyterian from about 1662, when he set up an Academy for Dissenting Students for those refused entry to the universities. He and Margaret lived at Stucton, a village near Fordingbridge.
Robert Whitaker was prosecuted by the Fordingbridge church wardens in March 1679 for not attending church, and was excommunicated on 2 May. An arrest warrant followed in Sept, and while there is no record of its being implemented, it is clear that he and his family (wife and several children) suffered.

One reference says Margaret's burial is "recorded in Fordingbridge parish records" but does not explicity say it is recorded in the parish church register, which seems less likely since her husband was a Presbyterian minister.
