He married Dianah Spencer, daughter of Benjamin Spencer of Connecticut, on December 31, 1789 . She died shortly after the birth of twins Owen and William in 1804.

He served in the War of Rebellion and was on Major Ross's 1781 expedition into rebel territory of Upstate New York. He later served as a company captain in the 1st Regiment, Prince Edward County militia beginning in 1804 and was activated for a short period during the War of 1812. In 1822, he was a lieutenant colonel and placed in command of 2nd Regiment, Prince Edward County Militia serving in that position until about 1831. In his later life, at about 70 years old, he was the lighthouse keeper at Point Peter in Prince Edward County. Shortly before his death he took a position working at the lighthouse at St. Anne's Wharf in Toronto. He is buried in an unmarked grave.

Note: Owen is the son of John Richards, Indian Interpreter. This is proven in a 1782 military court of inquiry transcript which listed both John Richards and "his son Owen Richards" as witnesses.
