Martin John Dunbar was born Eldin Randall Payne, the oldest child of Leslie Earle Payne and Mary Agnes Dunbar. After his parents' divorce in 1914, he was adopted by his maternal grandfather, Joseph Anthony Francis Dunbar. He lived his early years in Kansas, moving to Washington, DC in the early 1930's. He married Oleta Rosalie Anderson there on Septemer 3, 1936. They raised their 8 children in Arlington, VA. Marty served his country as a Marine during World War II. During the 1970's, Marty and Oleta relocated to St. Petersburg, FL.
