The son of Jonathan & Anna Maria (Jacoby) Keefer or Kieffer, he married Catharine Earnest and fathered William E. (b. @1856) and Anna D. (b. 01/17/60, d. 03/10/63). In 1860, he was a tailor living with his family in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

He had a brief and uneventful experience in the Civil War when he enlisted at the stated age of thirty in Mechanicsburg, mustered into state service September 11, 1862, as a corporal with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 24, 1862.

He died at his home eight months following a stroke.
