Graveside services for Ava Lee Balko, 84, of Portales, will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, January 2, 2016, in the Causey Cemetery with Leroy Thomas officiating. All family members and close friends will be honorary pallbearers. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Friday evening, January. 1, 2016, from 6 to 8 PM. Ava Lee joined her Heavenly Father and the rest of her family, December 27, 2015, in Muleshoe, TX, where she had been residing in the rest home.
Ava was one of seven children, being the sixth, of James Arthur and Clara Belle Gunnels. She was born in Eskota Texas on July 14, 1931, and spent her young years around Sweetwater, TX. On November 6, 1949, in Longworth, TX, she married the only love of her life, Harvey Lee Balko, and moved to Lingo NM where they made their home for 43years until Harvey's death in 1993. Ava was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family very much. She lived the word and walked with the Lord every day.
She is survived by her son, Mark from Portales; granddaughter, Tammie Hardt; great-grandsons, Kendal, Brady and Chaney Hardt from Artesia, NM; daughter, Phyllis Knous Balko from Clearwater, FL; granddaughter, Michele Poff from New Port Richey, FL; and great-granddaughter, Brittany Bonsal and great-great-granddaughter, Zoey Bonsal from Ashville, NC; grandson, Lee Poffand; great granddaughters, Clara and Scarlett Poff from Clearwater FL; a sister, Virginia Henderson from McKinney, TX; and a sister in-law, Ina Lee Gunnels from Palestine, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Julie Beevers,, Mark's very close friend and Ava Lee's caretaker of Portales.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters, and by her beloved husband, Harvey, who died January 10, 1993.
