Visitation was held Sept. 1 at Malone Funeral Home in Geneva. Services were held Sept. 2 at the United Methodist Church of Geneva, with the Rev. Jenny Weber officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva.
Mr. Granquist was a 1949 graduate of Geneva High School, where he participated in football, basketball and wrestling. He was an Army/Air Force veteran who was a gifted musician, playing in the 572nd Air Force Field Band of the West. After military service, he started playing piano with the Harry James Band, Sauna Finnegan Band and the Dream Weavers.
He then owned and operated the Imperial School of Music for 53 years, where he was known as "Uncle Herb." He was a member of Geneva Masonic Lodge 139, where in 2005, he received his 50-year pin. He was also a member of Geneva American Legion Post 75, Army Reserves, National Guard, Geneva Vikings Lodge 33, and Batavia Moose Lodge 682. He was past president of several state music competitions, was a former grand marshal of the Swedish Days Parade, and was founder of the Granquist Music Competition, held for the last 36 years during Swedish Days.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Adella (Anderson) McKinney-Granquist; two daughters, Konnie (Bill) Sherry of St. Charles, and Kristie (Bruce Dienst) Spurgin-Dienst of Geneva; and four grandchildren, Michael and Taylor Sherry and Kurtis and Kendal Spurgin. He also is survived by Konnie and Kristie's mother, JoAnne Granquist of St. Charles; and Adella's children, Carol (Bob) Cooley of California, and Ronald (Carol Lynn) McKinney of Rockford, as well as four cousins, Lena Andersson of Sweden, Dorothy Tornberg of St. Charles, and Ron and Bob Granquist, both of Batavia.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Terry Spurgin.
