Mary Doran, 89, of Lake Charles, LA died Saturday, December 26, 2015 in her residence.

Born a farm girl in North Louisiana on June 27th, 1926, Mary Helen Cole Doran, the daughter of Allie Norman Cole and Bailey Vincent Cole, lived a long and varied life. A proud journalism graduate of LSU, she broadcast radio news for KALB in Alexandria, then moved to Lake Charles, where she reported radio news for KPLC, broadcasting from the Majestic Hotel. She later covered various beats for the Southwest Citizen and the Lake Charles American Press, ultimately becoming the editor of the Focus entertainment section. She was a member of the Junior League of Lake Charles, and handled publicity as the League worked to establish the Lake Charles Symphony. Retiring from the Press, she operated a seafood brokerage and boat landing at Crab Lady Landing before settling into her real retirement of bird-watching and loving her children and grandchildren from the home she designed and helped build.

She is survived by her children, Mary Nan Doran Gatewood and Vincent Doran; daughter-in-law, Diane Doran; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Optimistic and interesting to the end, she will be sorely missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Doran; her siblings LaVohn Cole Neal and Lehane Cole; and her lifelong friend Lady Nan LaCour.

A visitation will be held from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Home, and a visitation will be held at Cypress Springs Baptist Church in Sailes, LA from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 2, 2015 followed by a memorial service at 1:00 pm. Burial will be at Williamson Cemetery following the service. Rev. Don Woodard will officiate services. Floral arrangements for the service at Sailes will be handled by Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Arcadia, LA.
