She was twelve years old and attending school in 1930. Together with her parents and siblings Earl N, Roy C, Aileen, Paul E, and Clarence I, she lived on a farm in Elmwood, Saline, Missouri. Next neighbors were William J. Schmidt, and Carroll Logsdon.

In 1938 she married Clifford Leroy Newkirk. The marriage was solemnized by a Seventh Adventist minister. Her husband Clifford was only 18 years old (two years younger than her) when they married in Missouri.
By 1940 both were living in Clarke, Jackson Township, Iowa. They were living in a farmer's household, and are registered as 'hired hand' and 'hired girl'.
Their son Clifford Lewis was born in September of that same year.
Ida Mae's husband went to college to study business, and later education. He became a school principal, and minister and elder of the Adventist Church.
His career took them to many different places, such as Indiana, Florida, Michigan, and Nebraska.
Ida and her husband lost their son in 1980. He died aged only forty.
Ida Mae passed away in 1992.
Place of death: St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska.
She is buried beside her husband Clifford.
