Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1958 to 1967), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox. Born James Jerome O'Toole, he attended Leo High School in Chicago and played collegiate baseball at the University of Wisconsin, prior to signing with Cincinnati as an amateur free agent in 1957. He marked his Major League debut with the Reds on September 26, 1958 and gradually made his way into their starting rotation, as he established himself a fan favorite. During the Reds' run at the National League Pennant in 1961, O'Toole produced a career-high 19 wins and pitched in 2 games during the 1961 World Series against the Yankees. In 1963, he achieved all star status. In 270 regular season games, he compiled a 98 win, 84 loss record with a lifetime 3.57 ERA in 1,615 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he worked in sales. He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 1970.
