MILTON -- Kenneth T. Caldwell, age 91, of Milton, Ind., passed away at his home on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007.

He was born on March 10, 1916, on the family homestead farm near Bentonville, Ind., to Carl W. and Eva Pearl Thornburg Caldwell and had lived most of his life in the area.


He attended Bentonville grade school and graduated from Lincoln High School in Cambridge City in 1934. He then graduated from Purdue University in 1938 with a B.S. degree in agriculture. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and played on the Purdue varsity baseball team.

In the summer of 1938 he worked his way to Europe on a cattle boat and toured Europe on a bicycle. He worked at Rushville Production Credit from 1939 to 1944. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran first lieutenant, serving from 1944 to 1946 in the Philippines. He started farming with his father on the family homestead farm in 1947. He raised hogs, cattle, sheep, soybeans and forest products during his 60 years of farming.

He served as Posey Township Trustee, Posey Township 4-H Leader and on the Fayette County School Board. He was the 1972 Master Farmer. In 2000 he was named the Outstanding Classified Forest Landowner. He was a member of the Milton Christian Church. He was past member of Connersville County Club, Hartley Hills Country Club, Connersville Kiwanis, the Indiana Walnut Council and the National Cattleman's Beef Association.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Morton Caldwell, whom he wed on Aug. 30, 1940; three children, David M. (Marti) Caldwell, Patricia (Rick) Slack and Charles W. Caldwell; six grandchildren, Ryan (Brooke) Slack, Craig Slack, Sara (Larry) Dick, Nathan Caldwell, Ian Caldwell and Tim Caldwell.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Luise Werking.
