Stephen Karpa, 78, of Meriden, passed through the veil to eternal life on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011.

He was born in Scranton, Pa. on July 8, 1932. He was the son of the late Frank and Catherine (Matzo) Karpa.

He was predeceased by his wife Irene (Paulick) of 50 years and his grandson, John Swistak, Jr.
Steve served in the U.S. Army in Panama during the Korean War. After the service he moved his young family to Connecticut, where he got a job at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in North Haven, where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was a past president of the Polish Knights club and was a member of the American Legion Post 45 in Meriden.

He is survived by his children, Nancy Swistak and her husband, John, of Meriden, Ronald, of Meriden, Steven, of Manchester, and Richard, of Newington; grandchildren, Rana Swistak, Elyse Hopkins, Taylore and Haley Karpa and Logan Karpa, Aimee Swistak wife of John Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Paris Karpa, Lillian Swistak and Bailey Hopkins; two sisters, Peggy Majcher, of Bartonsville, Pa. and Julia Kovacs, of Throop, Pa.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
