Longview Farmer Slain Friday Night, Rutherford Man Fires Fatal Shot, Was Drunk, Say Officers
Funeral Services were held Saturday afternoon for J.A. Smotherman, 70 year old Longview farmer, who was almost instantly killed shortly before midnight Friday night when shot by Jim Mallard at Mallard's home near Haynes cotton gin, Murfreesboro. Shortly after the murder, Mallard and his wife, Dovie Mallard, were arrested by Officers Rucker, Vance and Robertson and lodged in the Rutherford
County jail. As the grand jury is now in session it is expected that the case will be taken directly to the grand jury and no preliminary hearing will be held. The aged Longview farmer, who was a widely known in his home section, was shot in the left breast. A twenty gauge shotgun was used and the body was found about 40 feet from the Mallard porch. He is believed to have been shot while standing on the porch and stumbled to the spot where his body was found. The officers declared that both Mallard and his wife were very drunk when arrested. Rev. R.C. Crosslin officiated at the last services and interment was under the direction of Woodfin-Moore. In addition to his wife, Mrs Annie Smotherman, Mr Smotherman leaves the following children: Leonard, Roy, John D. Riley, Mrs Josephine Clardy, Mrs W.E. Jackson and Misses Edna, Katherine and Zadie Ruth Smotherman.
