Ruth Barker passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on December 19, 2015 at her home in San Antonio, TX. Throughout her illness, she remained upbeat and shared her love and smiles with those around her. She was an active member of Community Bible Church, Daughters of the Nile, and Red Hat Society. Ruth was born on April 28, 1938 in Ararat, VA. She graduated from Mount Airy High School in North Carolina in 1957 and Business School in 1959.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bill Barker; son, Franklin and his wife, Gwen; grandchildren, Lauren and Kristen Barker; great-grandson, William; grand-stepsons, Mason and Nolan Livesay, all of San Antonio, TX; her sister, Nancy Combs of Cana, VA; and several nephews & nieces. She was especially survived and loved by her pet-child, puppy and constant recliner-companion, Missy.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janice Barker Davis; her parents, John Frank and Helen Lorraine Brown; her brothers, Richard Brown, Ed Brown, and Bud Brown.

In 1957, she married the love of her life, Bill Barker. They shared a love of travel during his 30-year military career. She lived in and visited numerous foreign countries, where Ruth was quick to adapt to the local customs. She made lasting friendships with the local population and represented the United States with pride and dignity. As busy and fast as her life was, she still managed to stay employed, raise two children, serve as a scout den mother, and support military wives' social functions. After her retirement from Valero Energy Corporation, she fell in love with Recreational Vehicle (RV) travel. She traveled throughout the United States and Canada with her husband and her loyal companion, Missy. Ruth loved traveling with and attending the Alzafar Shiners RV club rallies, where she was known as an avid card player and keeper of the jelly bean jar. When not traveling or living outside the United States, San Antonio had remained her home base since 1963. She was loved and respected by many and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

The family would like to thank Freedom Hospice Staff for the compassion and care they provided Ruth during her illness. A very special thank you goes out from the Barker family to Leonel and Dianna Solis and Dianna's extended family for their love and compassion.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
