He served in the Confederate Army, Co. C (or D) 58th Virginia
Infantry, enlisting July 23rd 1861. (Shown on the left with his two brothers Bill and Peter Ridgway) Between June and August of 1862 he
was promoted to Sergeant. On June 1,1862 he was listed as being in the
CSA Hospital at Mount Jackson with "bilious fever" and on Sept. 22 as
being AWOL. On the 24th of August he was captured at Halltown (near
Charles Town, WV) and was soon afterward sent to Fort Delaware, a
prisoner of war camp. On June 21, 1865 he was released having taken
the Oath of Allegiance. He was then described as; complexion sallow,
hair dark, eyes blue and height 5 ft. 6 in.
John N. bought 120 acres of land from his Father Jan. 25, 1868. That
was what we used to call the mountain place, it being the ridge and
cove defined by Linville Mountain with Tory Knob.

On June 1, 1875 he married Mildred Ann Kennett, daughter of John
Fletcher Kennett. Children of this marriage were:
Sallie Maud Sept. 11, 1875 - June 13, 1924
William Henry Feb. 18,1877 - Nov. 15, 1924
