John Phillip Stokes, 65, Cashmere, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 1988 in Central Washington Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born March 26, 1923 near Twisp to John P and Anna E Stokes.
He graduated from Twisp High School in 1941 where he excelled in boxing and football. He attended Washington State College (now University) where he played football. He was an avid hunter.
He married Carroll W McCune, July 16, 1950 in Wenatchee. After a brief residency in Oregon they moved to Cashmere in 1951. Mrs. Stokes was employed by the Gerald Stage Orchard and the Paradise Orchards in Peshastin where he was foreman.
Survivors include his wife at home; one son, Brian of East Wenatchee; a stepson Alan McCune of Cashmere, a stepdaughter, Julie McCune of Cashmere; two brothers, Harry of Okanogan and Jay of Twisp; three sisters, Evelyn Emory of Pateros, Jacquelyn Boyce and Cecilia Campbell of Twisp; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Graveside services were held Friday, Sept. 2 at Cashmere.
