Janet Mackormick (or McCormick) married Andrew Balfour III in Midlothian, Scotland in 1769. While pregnant with their daughter, Isabella, her husband, Andrew, left for America (apparently to protect his family's reputation after his business when bankrupt believing he could raise funds there). Janet died while he was away, leaving young Isabella, who Andrew brought to America.

"Register of Proclamations
Proclamations in this Parish April 9th, 1769

Initiation of a purpose of marriage between Mr. Andrew Balfour Junior merchant in Edinburgh and Mistress Janet Mackormick (daughter of the late Rev. Mr. John Mackormick Minister of the Gospel at St. Andrews) now residing in this parish was this day published before these witnesses Alexander Tweedie Schoolmaster in this place and Andrew Begbie Servant to the (?) Doctor Joseph Mackormick Minister of the Gospel ... April 14, 1769

The above Mr. Andrew Balfour Junior and Mistress Janet Mackormick were married witnesses John Mitchelson of Middleton and Robert Hepburn of Clerkington Esqrs."

Janet MacKormick (sometimes spelled McCormick) was one of six children born to Rev John MacKormick, a local minister at St. Andrews in Fife, SCOT, and his wife, Anna Drew. She had a brother, Joseph b. 22 January 1733 , He was licensed to preach as a Church of Scotland minister bu the Presbytery of Edinburgh in 1757, but was not ordained until April 1760 when he became minister of Kilmany,
