George F. Atkinson
George F. Atkinson, 90, a Glidden-Durkee official of Sheffield Village, died Tuesday at Elyria United Methodist Village after a long illness.
He was the father-in-law of Arthur D. Hudnutt of Elyria, chairman of Lorain County Printing & Publishing Co. 's board. He was also the grandfather of Arthur C. "Coop'' Hudnutt, publisher of The Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria, and George D. Hudnutt, publisher of The Gazette in Medina.
Mr. Atkinson was born in Dexter City, Ohio, and graduated in 1929 from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, where he belonged to the Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Beta Kappa fraternities.
He was vice president of Glidden-Durkee Refineries when he retired in 1972.
He started in the accounting department of the Glidden-Durkee Foods Division in Cleveland in 1929, transferred to Louisville, Ky., in 1934, then returned to Cleveland in 1949 as assistant to the president.
He later transferred to Chicago and became head of all the Glidden-Durkee Refineries and also became vice president.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmette, Ill., and the Rotary Club in Louisville, where he was a former president.
He is also survived by his daughter, Sally K. Hudnutt of Elyria; other grandchildren, Kathryn "Kitty'' Hudnutt of Carlsbad, Calif., Sally Williams of Ostrander, Ohio, and Lisa Adelsberg of Elyria; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn (nee Wilson).
Graveside service: 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware.
Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria, is handling local arrangements.
