Obituary:J. Vernon Hodges,67, a native of Forrest City and partner in a business here, died early today in Baptist Hosp. in Memphis. Services will be at First Baptist Church with services by Rev. Clyde Hankins. Burial will be in Forrest Park cemetery by Stevens FH. Mr. Hodges had suffered from a heart condition for 10 years and had been hospitalized in critical condition for two weeks. Born here on Sep. 1,1899, Mr. Hodges was the son of Mrs. Emma Haven Hodges and Samuel Lee Hodges, Sr. A member of First Baptist Church, he had also served as a deacon. A World War I veteran, and a member of the American Legion. he had also served as a member of the Forrest City City Council for many years. He was a partner in Economy Furniture Company, and at the time of his death resided at 1619 S. Washington Street. Mr. Hodges is survived by his wife, Mrs. Norma Sellers Hodges, whom he married 45 years ago; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Bob (Glenn) Hammons, and Mrs. Verna Marie (Kyle) Woods, both of Forrest City. Four brothers, Basil Aubrey Hodges of Conway, Ark.; Norman Leicester Hodges of Pine Bluff, and Samuel Lee Hodges, Jr. of Ventura, California, and Cyril Haven Hodges of Wynne, Ark.; four sisters, Mrs. Doris Scaggs, Miss Evelyn Hodges, Mrs. Mildred Mullikin, and Mrs. Vadis Louise Isbell, all of Forrest City; and five grandchildren.
1954 BIO - Integrity in business is the keynote of the Economy Furniture & Appliance Store, where the owners Vernon Hodges, Floyd Moncrief, and Kyle Woods, live their religion every day and are noted for their courtesy, service, and friendliness. During World War I he served with the U.S.Army, but never left the states. Mr.Hodges has 35 years experience in the furniture business, first with Parker and Gregory; later with Gregory's Store. In 1937, he opened Hodges Hardware & Furniture Co., which was located on North Front St., in 1940 he moved into the old Becker and Lewis Building; then sold out in April, 1946 to Fred Moseley, his partner. In 1947 he opened Hodges Appliance Store. A year later, Floyd Moncrief became a partner, and in 1952, Kyle Woods, son-in-law of Mr.Hodges, joined the firm and the name was changed to Economy Furniture and Appliance Store. Mr.Hodges is the son of Mrs.Samuel Lee Hodges and the late Samuel Lee Hodges, and was born in the Hodges home on North Division, where his mother still lives. He attended Forrest City Schools, and on April 9,1922, married Miss Norma Sellers, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs.R.E.Sellers. They have two daughters, Mary Bob, now Mrs.Glenn Hammons, and Verna Marie, now Mrs.Kyle Woods. Grandchildren of Mr.& Mrs.Hodges are Cathy Hammons, and Kyle Woods, Jr. Mr.Hodges is a member of the First Baptist Church, served as Alderman from Ward 2 from 1936 to 1941; member of the Chamber of Commerce, and American Legion; leadership in the local District Scout work; and other community affairs.
