Daughter of John Hopkins, a pioneer of Prattsburgh. In 1836, she married Elam Bridges, a worthy farmer, who died in 1847. In 1849, she married Bartholomew Van Valkenburgh, an uncle of Gen. Robert B. Van Valkenburgh. She was his 3rd wife. Her husband became totally blind in a few years and subsequently died. She was a lady of a very kind and sympathetic nature and tenderly cared for him in his affliction and declining health. After his death, she shared her home with William Sherman and his family, having no children of her own. She was a member of the Prattsburgh Presbyterian Church for 55 years and was an aunt of Mrs. George W. Preston of Corning, Steuben Co., NY.
