MISSOULA - Dorothy Florence Byrne, 76, of Missoula, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the Evergreen Health Care Center of chronic lung disease.
She was born July 7, 1926, in Butte to Gebhard and Florence (Streb) Fassler of Melrose. Dorothy spent her early years on the family ranch on the Big Hole River near Melrose. She attended school in Melrose and later graduated from high school in Dillon.
Dorothy fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse by entering St. James Nursing School in Butte and graduating from Carroll College in Helena in 1947. She was a member of the Cadet Nursing Program, which existed for a short period after World War II. She worked at several hospitals in Montana and California.

While working as a registered nurse for the Public Health Department in Polson, she accepted an all-expense scholarship in public health at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Upon graduating in 1958, Dorothy assumed a position with the Public Health Department in Great Falls and later in Kalispell.

In 1961 Dorothy and Bill Byrne of Kalispell were married in Missoula. Together they farmed at Lake Blaine and in 1962 moved to Alaska, where she worked at Providence Hospital in Anchorage.

In 1969 the family, now including two sons, returned to Missoula to be closer to grandparents and extended family. The following year a daughter was born to the family.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother. Her life centered around family, friends and church. She was involved in the Altar Society, Habitat for Humanity and prayer groups.

She loved spending time in the outdoors. Her passions included fishing, camping, boating and adventuring.

Her parents preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband William Byrne of Missoula; three children, Ed Byrne and wife Susi of Vicenza, Italy, Charles Byrne and wife Alice of Missoula and Marianne Schumacher and husband Colton of Bozeman; two grandchildren, Sabine and Jack Donovan Byrne; and two sisters, Mary Hunt of Helena and Helen Coleman of Richland, Wash.

A vigil and rosary service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. at Garden City Funeral Home.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. A reception will follow at Garden City Funeral Home. Interment will be at New St. Mary's Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to Partners Hospice, 500 N. Higgins Ave., Suite 201, Missoula, MT 59802; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
