Lola Lee Byrd Melton Horney (1892-1973)

She was born to George Jefferson Byrd (1862-1951) and Hattie D Massey (1873-1898) They were married in Tom Green County, Texas - 10 Jul 1889. The marriage produced 5 Children. Zula Mae (Byrd) Weatherford; Lola Lee Byrd; George Byrd (who died young); Inez (Byrd) Clark; and Hattie (Byrd) Lasiter.

The 1900 Census - shows Lola with her father, George, her 3 sisters from her father's first marriage, her maternal grandparents - William L Massey and Evelina Albaney (Rogers) Massey, and her cousins through their mother's brother, John Quitman Massey: Clara Mae (Massey) Bright and Lena Massey (Who later becomes her step-mother).

George marries Lena Massey (his wife's niece) abt. 1901 based on the fact that the 1910 Census was taken 2 Jun 1900 and she was marked as single, and the fact their first child was born in April of 1902. The marriage 7 half-siblings: Clara Ora (Byrd) Revis; Noal Allen Byrd; Bonnie Dell (Byrd) Peiser; Lena Beatrice (Byrd) Norwood; Carl Lynn Byrd- twin of - Curtis Wynn Byrd; and Mary Francis Byrd.

The 1910 Census - shows Lola with her husband Hubert Earl Melton, and her father-in-law - William Thomas Melton, and her brother-in-law - James B Melton. *Please take note, it was a transcription error on the census record. He is written as 'Hubert E Melton.'

Lola Lee Byrd married Hubert Earl Melton when she was 17 according to the 1930 Census, making it 1909. Five children were born to the marriage: Hubert Byrd Melton (1910-1976); Herndon Lee Melton (1915-1997); Edna Earl (Melton) Lichnovsky (1916-1998); Howard Wilson Melton (1918-1943); Ina Mae (Melton) Lowe (1921-2006)

In the 1940 Census it states that Lola is divorced. I later found a marriage record in Tom Green County, Texas, it's dated - 27 Jan 1951. I believe Lola and Earl remarried!

9 Oct 1969 she married Ernest Horney, also in Tom Green County, Texas.

Lola Lee (Byrd) Melton Horney - Obituary ran in The Odessa American, Odessa, Texas - Wed, Dec 26, 1973: page 3.

Mrs. Lola Horney: San Angelo Mrs. Ernest (Lola Byrd) Horney - 81, died Monday in a nursing home here after an illness. Services were scheduled for 2 pm Wednesday in Robert Massie Funeral Home chapel, with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. She was born April 1, 1892, in Veribest and had resided in San Angelo for 35 years. Survivors include her husband of San Angelo and a son, Noel Byrd, of Hobbs, NM.

It is my opinion, that Noal Allen Byrd is her biological child with an unknown father, that her parents adopted. She would have been 12 years old when he was born. The reason I believe this, is because in her 1973 obituary - the only people named were her last husband Earnest Honrey, and a son - Noal Byrd. And he checks out to be in Hobbs NM with the same dates of birth as her 'brother.' **Please take note, every single one of her siblings and children outlived her, except for her youngest half sister - Mary Frances Byrd.
