Lucille Catherine Hottinger, age 98 of Belle Plaine, died on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11a.m. on Monday, December 7, at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Fr. Brian Lynch will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at church on Monday morning. Interment will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine.
Lucille was born in Belle Plaine on February 13, 1917 to John and Catherine (Vos) Meyer. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1934 and had fond memories of playing on the varsity girls basketball team during her high school days. On August 11, 1936 she married Dennis Hottinger at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Den and "Luss" ran the Stop Inn Cafe in town until 1959. She then worked several years at the plastics plant in town and then at Midland Glass in Shakopee for 17 yrs. until her retirement in 1982. She was a lifelong member of her parish women's circles and enjoyed cross-stitch needlework, all kinds of card-playing—especially her various bridge club activities. She also collected old jewelry pieces to create decorative wall hangings and especially enjoyed hunting for such treasures at garage sales. In her earlier years she loved finding furniture bargains at auctions, & she and Den would rehabilitate them with sandpaper, elbow grease, persistence, love, and the perfect wood finish. Their descendants still proudly use them, and they are fitting reminders of her tenacity, patience, stubbornness, inner strength, kindness, generosity, lively spirit, and enduring faith and love.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Den (1994), infant son Kenneth, infant sister Rose, brothers Bill, Ben, Elmer, Walter Meyer; sister Marie Albrecht. She is survived by sons Doug (Belle Plaine) & Dave (Edith) Hottinger (S.Milwaukee, WI); daughter Regi (Dick) Nachbar (Caldwell, ID); brothers George Meyer (Mankato), Bob Meyer (Lyons, NY); sisters Rita (Wayne) Lundquist (Carver), Elizabeth (Ted) Kellerman (Aitkin), Catherine Laird (Anaheim, CA); grandchildren Dana (Mary) & Jeff Hottinger, Carla (Keith) Hall, Laurie (Greg) Barr, Nick (Holly) Nachbar, Gina (Curt) Drellack; 17 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews.
By her example, Lucille taught us how to work hard, laugh heartily, and live joyously—we are blessed & grateful. For her beloved Den's funeral she chose this quote from St. Thomas More: "Pray for me, as I will for thee, that we may merrily meet in heaven". It gives us great comfort and peace to know that now in the cool of the day, Den and Luss dance merrily together in the garden with the Lord. Forever step lightly, Sweet Lucille.
