He was 25 when he was mustered into Company F, First Minnesota Infantry, as a corporal on Apr 29, 1861. Marion served for two and a half years and took part in 24 engagements.
On July 2, 1863, at the battle of Gettysburg, Company F was detached from the main body of the regiment and sent to halt enemy fire upon the regiment's left flank. During this maneuver, Abbott was shot and his arm was shattered. He was sent to a hospital in West Philadelphia to recover and discharged four months later on Nov 1, 1863. Being largely disabled, he filed Application #37,475 for a disability pension on December 15, 1863.
In 1864 he married Miss A. N. Nichols, who died at Dassel in 1872. Charlotte "Lottie" M. Forder became his wife in 1874. They raised eight children.
In 1910 Abbott was living in Spokane, Washington.
The 1917 roster of the veterans of the First Minnesota states that he was living by then in Phoenix, Arizona. He died there on May 18, 1927.
Charlotte filed Application #1,582,833 for a widow's pension on 10 June 1927.
