Pastor Bishop was part of the Presbytery of New Brunswick of which the First Presbyterian Church was part of at that time. He was a licentiate of this Presbytery and accepted a call to Easton. Besides leading the congregation in Easton, he was expected to lead the congregations at Durham and Mt. Bethel and teach at Union Academy for the salary of $350 a year.He was a Princeton Graduate and brought with him his wife, Sarah.
He was ordained Nov. 13, 1816 at Dr. Creitz's Church as there was no place of worship at that time for the church. In August 22, 1819, a new church was built and dedicated at the first service given by Rev. Bishop.
He died on May 19, 1822 of consumption, aged 30 years 5 months and 7 days. He was interred in the burial ground attached to the church until his remains were removed to Easton Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Sarah, a son, Calvin and daughter, Amelia Ann.
From the Sesquicentennial story of the First Presbyterian Church, Easton, Pennsylvania, 1811-1961 the following quotation is found by Rev. Bishop regarding the town of Easton. "The field together was altogether uninviting, without any house of worship, in a town whose reputation was far from savory, a town in which drinking and Sabbath desecration and dancing at public houses and card playing galore, justified the name of Sodom."
